Last week Jennifer Lum announced a holiday party she is organizing for the Boston startup community on December 9th. Lum, who was part of the m-Qube team and who continued on to work for Apple after it acquired Boston-based Quattro Wireless for $275 million, is part of a new Angel fund group called Apricot Capital (website forthcoming!).

The Playtime event will cost $5 at the door, which will help launch Sponsor a Startup, a site which will match entrepreneurs looking to have the cost of attending events underwritten with individuals and groups willing to pay to sponsor them. We asked Lum a few questions to learn more about the event and why startupers should save the date:

BostInno: Where did the idea for the event come from?

Lum: I’ve been discussing the amazing evolution occurring in Boston’s startup community quite often recently. I realized that celebration was a key component that needed to be added to the mix. We work hard, we network like crazy, but we also need events where we simply celebrate and have fun. That’s what Playtime is all about.

BostInno: What do you want to make sure the startup community knows about Playtime?

Lum: It’s going to be an evening where everyone should leave their work and three phones at home and come out to dance, hang out and enjoy the party. The management at Saint loved the idea and immediately wanted to help out. DJ Ms Thang is a good friend of mine and we’re really excited for her to spin at Playtime. And here’s an exclusive new twist for you: there are now TWO special guest DJs that will be playing along side Ms Thang…

BostInno: When did the idea to use proceeds from a $5 cover to fund Sponsor a Startup come into play?

Lum: I learned about Sponsor a Startup just prior to coming up with the idea for Playtime. I really liked what Ali and Andy were working on and thought that Playtime could help raise awareness for Sponsor a Startup and also donate funds to send some of the party attendees to events in 2011. Anyone interested in donating to Sponsor a Startup should contact Ali Powell.

BostInno: What is the #1 reason why Boston startupers should attend Playtime?

Lum: To represent!

Mark your calendars for Playtime on Thursday, December 9th at Saint in Boston from 9pm to 2am! Others in the community who have been material in organizing Playtime: Ali Powell, Kabir Hemrajani, Raj Aggarwal, Ben Dolgoff, Mike Fruzzetti, Peter Wernau, Roy Rodenstein, Katie Rae and Reed Sturtevant.
Editors note: Ali Powell is a contributor to BostInnovation and is co-founder of Sponsor a Startup, the site that proceeds from Playtime will help launch.
