Number One Baby!

Boston has topped the rankings of yet another competition. According to the Center for Digital Governments 10th Annual Digital Cities Survey Boston has ranked #1 among the most advanced digital cities in America. The study recognizes the municipalities that successfully use technology to better serve its citizens and conduct government operations.

Back in September 2010, the City of Boston website was ranked the #1 city government website in America in the Best of the Web Competition. This is the first year that the same city has won both awards.

“I am proud of the way that we are using technology to make government more accessible to Boston’s residents, businesses and visitors,” said Mayor Menino.  “This recognition is an honor for the Department of Innovation and Technology and the entire City of Boston.”

Boston has been on a trendsetting tech bender lately and this award comes off the release of the new Citizens Connect app, the release GPS tracking for Bus Routes, and real-time MBTA data.

From the press release, the award recognizes Boston for results achieved through the use of technology in the following areas:

  • Education & Human Services: Boston has made great strides in addressing factors that can contribute to unequal utilization of the internet – offering technology tools and training to underserved communities and working on expanding broadband access citywide. New systems will help schools, libraries and community agencies better serve residents.
  • Public Safety: Technologies that transmit real-time information and enable communication help public safety agencies reduce response times, identify problem areas and track ongoing incidents. Our tools also help engage Boston residents in public safety efforts by allowing them to text message crime tips and review crime stats.
  • Environment: Boston is a national leader on sustainability initiatives and we’re using technology to help accomplish our many green goals by promoting e-waste recycling, providing paperless services, implementing alternative energy systems, and investing in green technologies like LED lights. We’re offering services to residents that save money and energy while promoting energy conservation and curbing carbon emissions.
  • Open Government: Boston is using new technologies to make government more accessible and more responsive. We have increased transparency of the work that City Departments do by making service request data and performance metrics available. To keep the public informed of important decision making processes we offer notifications and reminders, electronic records and broadcasts of public meetings.

Congrats to Mayor Menino and the rest of the City of Boston.
