I have been waiting all day to write this story because I wanted to get access to RateBU.com before writing it. Well, I didn’t gain access, so here it goes anyway. Updated, I spoke with founder Justin Doody over the phone and was granted access. Check out our convo below.

Comparing girls against one another is nothing new. It happens all day, every day by groups of guys. So what’s the problem, right? Wrong, put it on the internet for people to see and it is either hilarious or devastating depending on which side you are on. One thing is for sure, though: it WILL go viral.

This is how Mark Zuckerberg got his start after all with Facemash.com. He put Harvard students against one another and let the student body decide who was better looking. I just recently saw The Social Network and after watching it I wish I was a hacker and could make badass sites like Facemash, but I can’t. But, what if you could? Enter Justin Doody, a BU sophomore and engineering major, and creator of RateBU.com.

RateBU.com is a complete ripoff of Facemash.com and Doody knows it. The tagline of the site even admits it: “Unique? Not really. Still fun? Absolutely!” As of right now, so far 1,221,350 votes have been cast on 733 girls. Something so simple and already done at Harvard is finally making its way to BU and taking off within the student population.

The site is very simple – you are dropped on a page with a picture of two girls and you vote on who is the hottest. There is also a top five – the five highest ranked girls on the site. Doody has received plenty of backlash and plenty of praise from his fellow students, and even plans to add a male rating section and expand to other schools. Check out our convo below.

BostInno: How long did it take to make the site and when did you launch it?

Doody: About four nights. I did all of the coding myself but had help with marketing and testing it. We launched it on Friday night.

BostInno: What inspired RateBU?

Doody: Well, I saw the movie [The Social Network] and thought it was a good idea at the time. And then a couple weeks later, a group of friends and I were talking about it and decided to build it because we knew it would be successful.

BostInno: Are you going to expand to other schools?

Doody: I have received a lot of feedback from people at other school who would want it, and there is potential revenue in that.

BostInno: How did you get the photos of the females?

Doody: It is all user generated, I haven’t added anyone. We have an admin panel that we watch and approve photos when they are added.

BostInno: What did you do to get this off the ground?

Doody: Ironically, just leveraged our Facebook friends and then posted some flyers on campus.

BostInno: So are you the celeb “Zuckerberg” on campus now? Are people coming up to you all the time now?

Doody: No one has come up to me in public yet, but I did go to a woman’s rights event tonight, and listened to them all bash it. I figured it was a good idea to show up, so I went with a group of friends.

BostInno: Have you built anything else like this or other projects?

Doody: I have designed a few websites, but nothing like this or as successful right away.

BostInno: Do you think you can monetize this?

Doody: I am not going to monetize RateBU.com, but if I do expand to other schools, I am planning on it, absolutely.

BostInno: What do your parents think about this?

Doody: [laughing] I just told them this afternoon actually, because I didn’t want them finding out over the news. They were positive about it, but slightly worried. I mean they don’t want to see their son criticized in the news but they support anything that I do.

What do you think of RateBU.com? Is it going to far? Would you be upset if you saw your picture on it?
