MIT OpenCourseWare has just announced the launch of their new OCW LectureHall iPhone app. The new iPhone app brings a social, more interactive viewing experience for MIT’s OCW videos for you to enjoy anywhere.

The app was built in collaboration with Irynsoft LLC’s, and uses their VIRT2GO platform to provide Facbook integration, forum capabilities and the ability to rate and review individual videos. One of the handiest features of the application is the ability to download video for offline viewing. You can get MIT knowledge dropped on you while riding the T everyday — despite being underground without service. You can also take notes and conduct web searches while watching the video directly on the app.

“The new LectureHall app provides a multidimensional experience for iPhone users,” says Stephen Carson, OCW’s External Relations Director. “Instead of simply watching the video, users can discuss the content and enhance their understanding with related materials.”

The MIT OpenCourseWare project kicked off in 2001 and has seen tremendous growth over the past 10 years. Through the MIT OCW the institution offers syllabi, lecture notes, exams, problem sets and more from over 2,000 of their courses. You can even create and join online study groups through the OpenStudy platform.

The OCW website sees more than 1.5 million web site visits per month from more than 215 countires and territories worldwide. To date, more than 100 million individuals have accessed OCW materials.

The LectureHall app is currently only available in the iTunes App Store, but Irynsoft is currently working on an Android version to be released over the summer.
