Last month we featured a sneak peak of Smuggle Truck, an addicting Boston-built game that allows you to create your own levels from right within the game. At the time we hinted at an upcoming level creation contest, and today the makers of the game, Owlchemy Labs, let us know the contest is officially on. If you are one of 10 best level creators, at stake is a caricature of yourself as a passenger in the game and your level being included in the game’s official release as an iPhone and iPad app.

A free, playable demo of Smuggle Truck can be found here on Kongregate. This popular online gaming portal shows the game has had over 1,000 plays already with lots of positive feedback in the comments. The level editor for the online version of Smuggle Truck is included right in the online playable demo. Anyone with a web browser can jump right in and experiment with creating their own levels for the game. Creators of top levels will win the prizes outlined at the bottom of the article.

Since Smuggle Truck began to hit the web over the course of the last month, in the past week the company has come under criticism from immigration coalitions claiming the game is offensive, some even suggesting Apple should block it from hitting the app store. (A few people even reached out to me based on the article we had published.) Owlchemy Labs has since released their full story here, where they state:

“Smuggle Truck was inspired by the frustration our friends have experienced in trying to immigrate to the United States. With such a troublesome issue being largely avoided in popular media, especially video games, we felt the best way to criticize it was with an interactive satire … With a satirical angle on a real issue, we want to create a game that is fun to play but also stirs up discussion on ways to improve the problematic immigration system in the United States.”

The premise of the game is simple: conquer levels by successfully smuggling as much “cargo” as possible over the border in your truck. The additional layer of engagement that sets the Smuggle Truck game apart from a technology perspective is its unique use of Unity to allow you to actually create levels yourself while playing the game. It is based off from a game engine software called Unity (an “integrated authoring tool” that won a Wall Street Journal Tech Innovation Award this past year).
