I’m glued to my iPhone from waking to shut eye (and that includes in front of my laptop). Now that a few of my friends hopped on board the iPhone train with thanks to Verizon, I’ve had to give a few 101 courses to help them make the most of it. Here are my top 10 tips, tricks and shortcuts to help you make the most of your iPhone 4 from basic to a bit more advanced:

1. The basics (undo, copy & paste, search).

  • Undo: Simply shake your iPhone to set the undo feature into motion.
  • Copy & Paste: Double tapping the text you want to copy will cause black buttons to pop up. Click the Select All button or Select and grab the ends of the blue highlighted text to expand your selection. Click the Copy button, and to paste, simply double tap again and hit the Paste button.
  • Search: The search feature spans names of apps and people in your contacts to email subject lines. Flip your home screen to the left-most page to find the search box.

2. Scroll to the top.

At the bottom of a webpage or long email and want to automatically go to the top without scrolling? Double tap the timestamp/signal bar and you’ll automatically zoom to the top of the page.

3. Organize and delete apps.

To move, organize into folders or delete apps that prove useless, press and hold down any app until all start shaking. To move an app, drag it to the position you’d like it in. To organize your apps into folders, simply drag one app on top of another. To delete an app, simply press the black X in the top left corner.

4. Live in the dock.

Just like you minimize open applications on your computer, you can do the same with apps on your iPhone. Once you open an app, it continues to run in the background even after you close it and open another. These open apps live in your iPhone’s dock.

  • To open the dock and quickly switch between apps, press the home button twice. Apple calls this “multitasking.”
  • Press the gray circular arrow button in your dock to lock your screen orientation. Your screen will remain in portrait or landscape no matter how you move or tilt your phone.
  • To exit an app without restarting your iPhone, press and hold an app in your dock until it shakes. Then, press the red minimize button to exit it.

5. Share multiple photos.

Instead of doing so one by one, go to your Camera Roll and click the share button at the button left. Select your photos, and then press the Share (either email or send over MMS), Copy, Print, or Delete buttons.

6. Screen shots.

Taking a picture of your screen like a high score in a game can be totally necessary sometimes. Hold down the home button and the sleep button (the button on the top right of the device) simultaneously to do this. The screen will flash and you’ll find the image in your Camera Roll.

7. iPod shortcuts.

There are a few shortcuts that make accessing your iPod music quick and easy. Your Apple headphones, for example, have buttons that can play, pause, skip songs and control the volume without needing to touch your screen. If your iPhone is locked or in sleep mode, pressing the home button twice will bring up the iPod controls without having to unlock it. And if you’re deep in an app on your phone and want to bring up the iPod controls quickly, open up the dock and you’ll always find them there. You can also use voice commands (see below).

8. Voice control.

You don’t need an app to enjoy voice commands on your iPhone 4. Hold the Home button down until you see the blue Voice Control screen. Saying words like “call,” “dial,” “pause,” and “play” followed by your contact names, songs, albums and more will turn your words into action.

9. Reset your iPhone.

Concern your GPS, wireless, mail, or other features aren’t working correctly? Before you schedule time at the Genius Bar, make sure you try resetting your phone first. Go to Settings > General > Reset where you can choose how and what you want to reset — from home screen layout to network settings. (Note: make certain to back your iPhone up on your computer through iTunes before resetting your iPhone.)

10. Track your iPhone.

It REALLY hurts to lose your iPhone, so prepare for it. To track your iPhone remotely for free you need 2 things: the Find My iPhone app and a MobileMe account. (Create a free MobileMe Account by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > MobileMe and then either enter your Apple ID or create a new free Apple ID.) Armed with app and account, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and into your MobileMe account to make sure the “Find My iPhone” button is set to On. If you lose your phone, go to me.com and authenticate with your MobileMe / Apple ID info to view where it’s located on a map.
