Cupcakes are a dime a dozen in Boston. Not that I’m complaining, but it’s no longer news when a cupcake bakery opens up shop in the area.

That is, except when one of those cupcake shops offers a first-of-its-kind make-your-own-cupcake bar.

Started three years ago in Needham, Treat Cupcake Bar opened its second location at The Street in Chestnut Hill this week, serving up an easy sugar high for those with a sweet tooth. The 1,100 square foot shop is bright and bubbly, echoing the elated feeling that you can only get after eating an indulgent cupcake.

At Treat, choose from 16 daily flavors, running the gamut from red velvet, oreo and peanut butter to seasonal specials like creamsicle and candy apple. There are also vegan and gluten-free options, as well as a children’s cupcake decorated with an elaborate icing of animals. Each month, there is also a rotating “Treat Others Well” cupcake, in which a portion of the proceeds go to a different local nonprofit organization.

Upon visiting Treat, I sampled everything – yes, everything – and despite loving it all, my stand-out  favorites were the seasonal strawberry cheesecake and the everyday Half Moon, a too-good-to-be-true combination of marble cake, cream cheese frosting and ganache.

But the best part was undeniably the make-your-own-cupcake bar.

Here’s how it works: choose one of four different types of cakes – gold, chocolate, marble or gluten/dairy/egg-free chocolate – and one of four flavors of frosting – classic buttercream, cream cheese, chocolate buttercream, gluten/dairy/egg-free vanilla.

Then, the fun part. Peppermint patties, pop rocks, pretzels, peanut butter cups – there are 20 toppings available, and you can choose any three to top your cupcake.

You frost the cupcake and sprinkle the toppings on yourself, resulting in a truly, one-of-a-kind treat.

For the record, I went with a combination of marble cake, cream cheese frosting and chocolate-covered pretzels, Heath bar pieces and golden Oreos, and it was easily the best thing I’ve ever made.

Check out photos from my outing to Treat below. If you’re going to eat cupcakes, Treat is the place to do so.

Treat Cupcake Bar is located at 49 Boylston Street in Chestnut Hill and is open Sunday-Thursday from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.-11 p.m.
