The 2013 Kentucky Derby post positions have finally been solidified after much anticipation. Post position isn’t everything in this game, though. Sure it always helps to have the inside track, but in the end its all about the horse. Horses could easily peak before the derby, some might not peak at all. But any advantage helps, especially with a field of this caliber. The positions are chosen by rolling dice, which indicate the position, and choosing randomly choosing an entry, the horse, and the field is filled out from there. UPDATE: Here is the 2013 Kentucky Derby live stream. Watch it online!

The last horse to win from the first position, or “one hole,” was Ferdinand in 1986. Before that, it was Sir Barton in 1919.

Here’s a list of the post positions for the 2013 Kentucky Derby:

Fear the Kitten will take up the 21st spot as an alternate.

Goldencents, in the 8th position, has drawn a lot of attention lately and, though a skilled horse, its not necessarily because of chops on the track. University of Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino has small 5% stake in the horse. And this isn’t his first rodeo, err, derby. USA Today notes that  “He was a part owner of AP Valentine (7th in 2001) and Halory Hunter (4th in 1998).” He could very well become the first person to win both the NCAA men’s basketball championship and a Kentucky Derby, or even the Triple Crown depending on how Goldencents fares.

Odds-makers will certainly be keeping a sharp eye on the drawings because post position affects the likelihood of victory.

Prior to the draw, KentuckyDerby.com posted “expert picks” for the Run for the Roses, pegging Revolutionary as the earlier victor followed by Orb, then a tie between Normandy Invasion and Verrazano, and finally Goldencents. With names like those, they’re all winners in my book.
