UPDATE: Here is the 2013 Kentucky Derby live stream. Watch it online!

All it took was the roll of a die and a name chosen at random to solidify the 2013 Kentucky Derby post positions last night. Now that those have been determined its on to one of the most important aspects of the Run for the Roses, odds-making and gambling. While odds can essentially set by anyone or with any betting entity of your choice, the Kentucky Derby turns to Mike Battaglia who has been setting the line since 1975. By his wisdom, the early favorites for this years stakes race are Orb in the 16th position, Verazzano in the 14th, Goldencents in the 8th, and Revolutionary in the 3rd.

So how exactly does Battaglia determine the morning line for Saturday’s race. Though his figures are technically more of a guide-line as the actual odds are decided by bets placed, Battaglia cites a number of factors including a horse’s past and recent form, its handicapping speed, whether its bloodlines were able to handle the distance and surface, bets from previous races, field size, and a bit surprisingly publicity both good and bad. Of course, there must be some kind of intuition on his part but those are only a handful of factors he uses.

Here’s the list of positions, horses, jockeys, and odds:

1. Black Onyx- Joe Bravo (50-1)

2. Oxbow- Gary Stevens (30-1)

3. Revolutionary- Calvin Borel (10-1)

4. Golden Soul- Robby Albarado (50-1)

7. Giant Finish- Jose Espinoza (50-1)

8. Goldencents- Kevin Krigger (5-1)

9. Overanalyze- Rafael Bejarano (15-1)

10. Palace Malice- Mike Smith (20-1)

11. Lines of Battle- Ryan Moore (30-1)

12. Itsmyluckyday- Elvis Trujillo (15-1)

13. Falling Sky- Louis Saez (50-1)

17. Will Take Charge- John Court (20-1)

18. Frac Daddy- Victor Lebron  (50-1)

19. Java’s War- Julien Leparoux (15-1)

20. Vyjack- Garrett Gomez (15-1)

Though as mentioned above these were determined by 30+ year veteran odds-maker Battaglia, they’re far from set in stone. As a number of aspects and facets are considered when making the line, an equally if not higher number of variables can prompt the slightest changes, whether it be the sloppiness of the track or how a horse deals with a large field.
