It’s hot out there. Boston’s first heat wave since July 2012 is proving to be a killer, given that just last week everyone in Boston was freezing their asses off in 40-degree rain. But we’re New Englanders, dammit, and we can cope … by heading indoors, of course. Public places around the Hub have began to ramp up the air conditioning for patrons to escape, and savvy-Craigslist users are selling AC units to make a quick buck off people like you who can’t stop complaining about the heat. Read on for where to stay cool, how to purchase cheap AC, and if you’re brave enough, where to kick it outside in the sun.

Where to Cool Off in the AC

Boston Public Library – You forgot libraries still existed, didn’t you, you little Kindle-loving fiend? Well, they do, and the BPL is a pretty fantastic library. Head there to enjoy the free AC and get lost in a book (no, your Kindle doesn’t count). Open Monday –Thursday,  9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Prudential Center – Your wallet may not appreciate it, but your wardrobe will certainly improve after a stroll through the mall inside the Pru. Yes, AC is included. Open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Museum of Science – Fuel your brain while chilling out in the AC at the MOS. Check out the exhibit halls, or plop down in the huge IMAX Theater. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., $22/adult. For the complete schedule, click here.

Institute of Contemporary Art – So, you may not own a boat to get out on the Boston Harbor, but you can sit inside at the ICA and take in the stunning Harbor views and awesome art in the comfort of central air. Open Thursday & Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., admission is free on Thurs. night from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. $17/adult all other days.

New England Aquarium – Penguins have the right idea. Watch sea creatures frolic in cold water at the newly renovated New England Aquarium. Open Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., $19.95/adult during construction.

AMC Loews Boston Common 19 & Regal Fenway StadiumFast & the Furious 6 is calling your name.

How to Buy an AC Unit

Sleeping in your sweaty apartment with no central air is going to be a nightmare tonight. It’s time to fork over cash to buy an AC unit. I took the liberty of searching Craigslist for people selling AC units under $200 in the Boston area. Go forth and purchase.
