RunKeeper announced Tuesday morning it is integrating with MyFitnessPal, a fitness and diet app that lets users track food intake and exercise. Users of the two apps will now be able to exercise with RunKeeper and record the calories burned in their MyFitnessPal journal.

“At RunKeeper, we’re passionate about helping people lead healthier lives. MyFitnessPal was one of the most requested integrations from our users—we’re now able to offer both of our user bases a more holistic way to reach their health and wellness goals,” said Jason Jacobs, CEO of RunKeeper. “We see this integration and partnership as a sign of where the industry as a whole is headed, towards true interoperability and data sharing so users have the best experience and achieve the greatest results.”

It’s also a sign of RunKeeper’s increasingly narrow focus, on turning the mobile phone into a personal trainer, rather than a one-stop health app. (That’s something Jacobs discussed with me in an interview a year ago.)

The integration could potentially help RunKeeper attract users, as MyFitnessPal boasts 40 million users to RunKeeper’s 20 million.
