Day 17 in the trial of Whitey Bulger has proved to be the most dramatic yet. After more than two weeks in the Moakley US District Court House, Bulger has broken his silence – not to testify, but to yell some expletives. A shouting match ensued as Kevin Weeks, Bulger’s former protege, was finishing his testimony on the stand:

According to reporters in the courtroom, the fight started over Weeks accusing Bulger of being an informant, which Bulger himself and his lawyers vehemently deny. That accusation is the only one, amidst his 32-count indictment and 19 charges of murder, that Bulger has shown any reaction to whatsoever. Kevin Cullen, a reporter for the Boston Globe and one of the few media personnel allowed in the courtroom, tweeted the exchange:

Today was Kevin Weeks’ second day of testimony against the man he once considered a father figure. Weeks, 57, began working with Bulger in the mid-1970’s. The two men had not seen each other in 17 years, until yesterday.

The prosecution considers Weeks’ testimony as dire information in the conviction of Bulger. According to the Boston Globe, Weeks spent Monday telling the court room how Bulger “killed without remorse, handled kilos of cocaine, and routinely extorted thousands of dollars from anyone viewed as an easy target.” Weeks was indicted in 2000, where he ultimately plead guilty to racketeering charges and aiding in five murders. He served a five-year sentence in prison on an agreement that he would testify against Bulger.

After the judge intervened, the defense brought the questioning of Weeks to a quick close. Court has been adjourned for the day, and what a day it was:

Talk about a productive day in the office.
