With the iPhone 5S release date swiftly nearing, the last thing Apple or iPhone users want is a constrained shipment. But that’s what’s reportedly occurring, according to South Korea-based tech publication DigiTimes. Apple has allegedly been gearing up to include a fingerprint sensor in its next-generation iPhone 5S, though it appears the new feature could be related to the reduced shipments.

Apple rarely includes brand new features in its ‘S’ branded iPhones and a fingerprint sensor would likely bolster security by including an additional measure in instances such as mobile payments and peer-to-peer encrypted Wi-Fi. However, as if the new component is too good to be true, DigiTimes notes that “Poor yields of fingerprint-recognition chips and LCD driver ICs will likely force Apple to reduce first-quarter shipments of the rumored iPhone 5S,” which is rumored to launch in September of this year.

Back in June, Apple was awarded a patent for technology to “include thumbprint or fingerprint sensing components, or any other suitable biometric sensing components, to identify the user currently using” a specific device, thought to be the upcoming iPhone 5S.

The diminished shipment could be in the millions and pushed back to Q4, or more specifically, “About three million units of the initial shipments of iPhone 5S will be delayed.”

This isn’t the only issue Apple is said to be facing when it comes to implementing new technology in its upcoming devices. The Cupertino company is rumored to be considering two upgraded versions of the iPad mini, one with minor tweaks to be released this fall and the other to include a Retina display and to be released in 2014 at the earliest. The reason behind crafting two versions is that Apple simply hasn’t been able to figure out how to pack the pixel-heavy Retina display in its 7.9-inch iPad mini display. The regular-sizes iPad with Retina display (4th-generation) is nearly two inches larger, measuring in at 9.7-inches.
