The day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here: the royal baby is on the way! Kate Middleton was admitted into St. Mary’s Hospital in the early stages of labor at about 6:00 a.m. BST (12 a.m. here in Boston).

“Things are progressing as normal,” said a royal spokesman.

The public announcement of the baby’s birth will come after Queen Elizabeth II is informed of the baby’s birth via an official royal document from the hospital, according to tradition. The document, giving the baby’s gender and time of birth, will then be displayed on a wooden easel in front of Buckingham Palace.

Along with this traditional announcement will come updates from the Palace’s official Twitter and Facebook pages, so that the entire world will have access to the Royal Baby’s details.

Today’s exciting news comes after conflicting reports about Kate Middleton’s due date and speculation that the Duchess was overdue. The media has been camped out in front of the Lindo Wing exit since the beginning of July. According to the BBC, today is slated to be the hottest day of the year in London, but these dedicated photographers and journalists aren’t likely to let something minor like the temperature deter them from their vigil.

Royal Baby Watchers who haven’t staked out a spot at the hospital can still get a glimpse of the action with this Royal Baby Livestream. Right now, with the Duchess still in labor, all that can be heard on the camera is journalists chatting in charming British accents and cameras snapping photos, but when Kate and Prince William emerge with their newborn baby, the scene is sure to pick up.

Official document aside, I hope that Prince William takes a cue from another royal family to introduce his baby to the world:
