If you are anything like me, your childhood summers were spent locked in your bedroom, building Lego masterpieces fit for mini Lego kings. Decades later, I may not own any of those colorful building blocks, but I do get nostalgic whenever I see kids playing with theirs.

Imagine my delight then when I heard the following news: a Legoland Discovery Center is opening in Somerville. The Boston Globe reports that the new facility will take over a whopping 44,000-square-foot space inside the new Assembly Row development. The developers hope that the center will draw families from all over New England, and offer a two- to three-hour destination spot for visitors. And it’s not just for kids: the Globe explains that Legoland locations host adult nights, including theme parties and other events for older enthusiasts to get their Lego on without little kiddies ruining everything getting in the way.

Russ Joyner, Vice President and General Manager at Assembly Row, tells BostInno that the project should be completed in about a year, and says that once its complete, it will be a “major accomplishment, major addition” to the neighborhood.

“This is the kind of production… that the Assembly Row project is proud of delivering,” adds Joyner. “[It’s] a unique experience that blends retail and entertainment with offices and residential.”

Sure, Legoland is a bit gimmicky, but, c’mon we all want to relive those glory days of using our imaginations to construct monstrous castles and rocket ships. As of now, you’d have to travel to Westchester, New York to experience Legoland at its finest. Somerville, here I come!
