Attorneys J.W. Carney and Hank Brennan began their case to defend Whitey Bulger, the Boston gangster on trial for a 32-count indictment in South Boston, on Monday morning. Late last night, the defense team filed twenty photos to be submitted to the court as evidence. Lawyers have asked US District Court Judge Denise J. Casper to allow these photos to be presented to the jurors as proof of Bulger’s life outside of crime. They did not provide any descriptions or comments along with the pictures.

However, the majority of these photos can speak for themselves. Below, you will find pictures of Bulger with various forms of animals in what can only be an attempt to make him appear less serial killer, more family man. Don’t worry, there are puppies, goats and a parrot, for good measure. Oh, and a former priest defrocked for sexually abusing boys in the 80’s. That, too.

Yesterday, both the judge and prosecution alike pushed for an answer to the cliffhanger of the case: will Bulger himself testify?

Unfortunately, an answer was not given before court adjourned on Wednesday.

The defense has called only a handful of witnesses to testify this week, and only plan to have eight more take the stand (starting today). In an attempt to derail the notion that Bulger was a government informant in the ’80’s, the defense is bringing in multiple FBI agents and experts as witnesses. Whether or not Bulger himself will testify in court is expected to be determined by the end of this week.

James “Whitey” Bulger is currently on trial for money laundering, racketeering, gun crime, and nineteen murders in the Moakley US District Court House in South Boston. The former leader of the Winter Hill Gang of Boston in the 1970’s and ’80’s, Bulger is considered a legendary mobster whose capture after sixteen years on the run proved a major feat for the US government. His trial, currently one of the most prominent court cases in the country, is expected to last until September.
