UPDATE: Jury Finds James “Whitey” Bulger GUILTY on first 2 racketeering counts, Extortion, Money Laundering

After almost five full days of deliberations reaching some 32.5 hours, the jury has reached a verdict in the James “Whitey” Bulger federal case. The trial has captivated the nation throughout its entirety due to its severity of the crimes, mysterious deaths of witnesses, and loud profane-laced outbursts in court as well as the infamous reputation of the South Boston mobster and his story of being on the run for 16 years.

The John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse in the South Boston neighborhood of Massachusetts’ capital is currently swarmed with members of the press, friends and relatives of victims, and Boston residents showing just how much of an impact the trial as whole has made on the community at large.

The trial has ensued for roughly two months during which time Bulger did not take the stand, having claimed at one point that he was subjected to an unfair trial.

Of course, when it comes to the significance of the  33 charge indictment against him and the justice wanted from the victims’ families, his cry of foul will go unheard.

As for the actual verdict, the judge has made it known to the members of the jury that all 33 counts have to come with a unanimous decision for conviction, even though Bulger only needs to be convicted of two crimes within 10 years of each other to be guilty of racketeering.

It took the jury 70 witnesses and hours worth of evidence to reach their conclusion this afternoon as Bulger was known as Boston’s most notorious gangster and the leader of the Winter Hill Gang in the 1970s and 80s. After being tipped off of his impending indictment by a corrupt FBI officer, Bulger fled the state in 1994. He successfully evaded authorities for more than a decade and a half before being captured in Santa Monica, Calif. in 2011. He is currently being held without bail in South Boston.
