The first official Divergent teaser trailer was released this afternoon in the form of a 12-second clip. Set to hit theaters in March 2014, Divergent is an original take on an old yarn spun about a dystopian society set in the (not so?) near future. The cast and crew hosted a much-watched Q&A panel session at Comic Con 2013, though this is the first piece of visual insight into how the movie will look and fare.

The plot takes place in future Chicago where society is divided into five factions that each represent a different human virtue. Upon turning sixteen years old, the young adults must decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another and stay there for the rest of their lives. But one such teen has a secret that nobody knows which, if it gets out, could threaten her life.

She is a Divergent.

Cue mind being blow.

The cast has some star power in Academy Award winner Kate Winslet (Titanic, The Reader) and potential in up-and-comer Shailene Woodley (The Descendants, The Spectacular Now) as well as an accomplished director in Neil Burger. Even better for the movie, though, is the already built in audience courtesy of Veronica Roth’s novel of the same name which has received near-universally positive reviews.

Burger has helmmed popular mid-range budget movies like Limitless and The Illusionist the latter of which received critical acclaim and an Oscar nod. Both of those two films combine for a $43 million budget, almost half of Divergent‘s hefty $80 million.

Of the script, Roth noted optimistically, “Reading a script is a really interesting experience. I’d never read a script before. I was really impressed by how closely it stuck to the general plot line of the book,” which should come as no surprise as the script was adapted by screenwriters Vanessa Taylor, who’s penned a number of Game of Thrones episodes, and Evan Daugherty who contributed to Snow White and the Huntsman.
