Commonwealth is slated to open this fall in Kendall Square, at 11 Broad Canal Way, bringing fresh, local produce to your dinner table, both at home and at the restaurant. The operation is currently underway as a “farm to table” restaurant and market, with the goods provided by New England “farmers, cheesemongers and fisherman.” The project is in the process of coming to fruition, and the team at Commonwealth is asking for your help, via Kickstarter.

Chef Steve “Nookie” Postal aims to create an atmosphere that has a focus on both locally sourced ingredients and the customer — the dishes will be fresh and appealing to everyone from refined foodies to the most traditional muncher. From the Kickstarter campaign page:

Our guests will feel just as comfortable eating a Brambly Farms Pig Head Roulade as an old fashioned roast chicken with whipped potatoes. Polish . . . without the formality. No pretentiousness here. Just good solid honest food.

In addition to the restaurant, the market space in Commonwealth will stock local, everyday essentials like milk, butter and cheese, with an emphasis on sustainability. And if you’d like to feel better about your morning trip to Dunkin’ Donuts, or your afternoon microwave lunch, there will be grab-and-go items for sale, from blueberry muffins, to salads and sandwiches, and fully composed dinners, like roast chicken, carrots and potatoes and pasta. So whether you have time to sit down or are in a hurry, Commonwealth has options for you to still get your fresh fix.

Currently, the new space is under construction, but they need help stocking the store. The Kickstarter campaign is running until September 25, and they’re looking to raise $50,000 by the end of the 30 days. So far, the campaign has raised more than $13,000 since it was launched yesterday, which is certainly not too shabby. The various rewards for donating range from a jar of homemade jam to a private pig roast, and if that’s not convincing enough, consider Chef Postal’s parting words:

A successful Kickstarter response will help us in our final push to open the doors this Fall.  We are almost there and with your help we can put the final pieces in place.  This is not just another restaurant.  This is an answer to a need the community has been searching for. This is OUR dream . . . but we want to share it with YOU! Please help back us in our final sprint to the finish line,  and, remember, no matter the amount . . . every Lil’ Bit helps.
