Need last minute Labor Day getaway plans?  I’m looking at you – procrastinators, workaholics and those in complete denial that summer is coming to an end (myself included).  While it’s probably a tad late to purchase a flight to Tahiti and plan your exotic dream vacay, it’s definitely not too late to pack the car and head to one of Massachusetts’ own beautiful destinations.

Yes, believe it or not, most Americans (with the exception of Myrtle Beach honky tonk lovers) are insanely jealous of our close proximity to clam bakes, lighthouses and leisurely New England beach culture.  Enjoy a quick day trip or spend the entire weekend roasting under the sun (weather permitting).  It’s the last time you’ll have to be in a bathing suit (thank god) so embrace your lobster-eating hedonistic ways this Labor Day weekend at any of these nearby destinations.

If you’re looking for music, beer and floating lanterns (why not?)

Newburyport – Get hoppy in Newburyport this Labor Day weekend at the Newburyport Brewing Company. Or, if lighting and floating lanterns is your thing, head to the Newburyport Lantern Festival on September 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. Did I mention there is a Newburyport Riverfront Music Festival happening on August 31 from 12 to 6 p.m. … with a beer tent? You can enjoy food, booze, and a musical line up that includes Matt Nathanson.

How to get there: From North Station, take the commuter rail on the Newburyport Line.

If you’re looking for bright lights in a little city

Rockport –  Ever heard of Larry David or Jon Hamm?  Let it be known that just last year they filmed Clear History, an HBO movie set in Martha’s Vineyard but actually filmed in Rockport. That’s right. Rockport is like a much closer, much less crowded version of Martha’s Vineyard. Hey, we’ll take it. And while you’re in town, check out the nearby 29th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival from August 30 – September 1. And, don’t miss the lighted boat parade and fireworks display taking place on August 31.

How to get there: From North Station, take the commuter rail on the Rockport Line.

If you’re looking for some R&R

Mattapoisett – Looking for that quaint, small town feel? Take a short drive down to the South Coast (traffic willing) and check out America’s oldest seaside inn, the Inn on Shipyard park. Bring your bikes to explore the town, or sit and watch the sailors at the picturesque harbor on Buzzard’s Bay. Make sure you stop in at the recently opened Town Wharf General Store, owned by Boston businessman Chris Demakis and New Bedford attorney Vince Cragin. They sell everything from beach toys to specialty cheeses, foods and fun knick-knacks.

How to get there: Rent a Zipcar. Mattapoisett is low key, meaning no commuter rail into the town.

If you’re looking to go on a fried seafood binge … and hit the beach

Ipswich – If you’re in the mood to dig your toes in the sand one last time, then hit up Crane Beach. One of the best beaches in the Northeast, you can enjoy boardwalks, beautiful sand dunes and of course, The Clam Box.

How to get there: From North Station, take the commuter rail on the Newburyport Line.
