By a vote of  11-0, the Revere City Council voted on Tuesday night to support a host community agreement signed last week for a casino at the Suffolk Downs racetrack, according to a Boston Globe report.

The passing of the host agreement marked the last formal step before the track’s casino plans can reach a public referendum vote in Revere and East Boston.

Suffolk Downs and Caesar’s entertainment are seeking the sole Eastern Massachusetts casino license, following the announcement of the host agreement last week.

If a casino is brought to Suffolk Downs, Revere will receive a percentage of gross gaming revenues collected at the facility. Minimum payments between $4.2 million to $9 million will be required for the first five years of the 15-year pact.

Revere officials, however, believe payments will reach nearly $15 million annually, a figure based on the casino generating $1 billion in revenues.

According to Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo: “As casino revenues go up, our revenues go up.”

“I’ll work with Boston to set a date for a special election for residents to decide if they want a casino located at the track. It will likely be held in either Oct. 29 or Nov. 5,” Mayor Rizzo told the Boston Globe.

Before any casino can come to a vote, state law requires a 60-day campaign.

The approval of the host agreement Tuesday night was a required part of the licensing application process.

Mayor Menino prefers that the casino vote be limited to only East Boston. The city of Boston, however, must also approve the Suffolk Downs casino.
