Police Commissioner Ed Davis will reportedly announce his resignation this morning during a 10 a.m. press conference at police headquarters, multiple outlets report.

Davis’s tenure, arguably, will be most remembered for decreased violent crime rates and his leadership following the marathon bombings and the subsequent police manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

He has come under some fire for the department’s lack of diversity in higher positions. Last Thursday, only three mayoral candidates, including Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley, said they would retain Davis as commissioner if elected.

Davis, 57, was appointed by Mayor Tom Menino in 2006. During his seven years as commissioner, violent crime has decreased 30 percent.

A source quoted by the Globe said Davis had been considering his resignation for months and that he and the mayor were a “package deal.” His transition out of the position will loosely coincide with Menino’s final months in office.

It’s speculated that Davis will pursue a fellowship opportunity at Harvard. President Barack Obama is also said to be considering him for secretary of Homeland Security, according to multiple outlets, a position that has yet to be filled.

During an interview with NECN last month, Davis — when asked about the Homeland Security position — said it was an honor and a duty to consider it.

Davis is expected to leave his job within 30 to 60 days after his announcement.
