Here in New England, fall stands out as one of the highlights of the year. It’s basically why, instead of flocking to a city that boasts sunshine from January to December, we choose to put up with the grueling winters that grip the northern states for what feels like eternity. Because before the trees turn into sad, bare, decrepit things in winter, they’re magnificent beings in fall that bloom shades of red, orange, and yellow, setting fire to the woodsey landscape.

As anyone who lives in a seasonal state will tell you, it’s awesome.

But the downside of fall foliage is that the peak of leaf-peepin’ season can disappear before you even get a chance to step outside the concrete constructs of Boston Proper. Different locations peak at different times, though, so with a little planning, you could be facing a full-fledged month of fall foliage this October.

Without further ado, here are a number of destinations to hit up before the trees begin to shed their leaves, whether you plan on making a day trip or staying within Boston. Manageable both by car and foot, all you have to do is throw on your best fall sweater and marvel at the sights.
