Eighty years ago today, the United States federal government second-guessed itself on one of the loftiest legislations it’s ever passed. And thank goodness. On December 5, 1933 the 21st Amendment was ratified, repealing the prohibition of alcohol which remained commonplace since 1920. Imagine 13 years without drinking? Woof.

The amendment repealed the National Prohibition Act, known colloquially as the Volstead Act, which made the sale, production, importation and transportation of alcoholic beverages of any kind utterly illegal. Interestingly, the bill was vetoed by President Woodrow Wilson but was overridden by the House of Representatives the very same day.

The most obvious offshoot of prohibition was a booming period for the alcoholic underground: the speakeasy. In fact, according to the National Archives, there were anywhere between 30,000 and 100,000 speakeasy clubs in New York City alone.

So to help you ring in the 80th consecutive year of drinkability and assuming the innards of your wallet are just as pathetic as mine, here are a few of the BostInno crew’s favorite watering holes where you can drink a lot for just a little.
