Mayor-elect Marty Walsh’s future chief of staff is 29 years old, his Twitter handle is @dank, and he’s a big fan of BuzzFeed list-posts.
Daniel Arrigg Koh, the general manager of Huffington Post Live and former advisor for Mayor Tom Menino, will assume chief of staff duties after Walsh is sworn in Monday, Jan. 6.
“I’m excited to have Daniel joining our Administration and bring a fresh, new energy to the Mayor’s Office,” Walsh said in a statement. “He has broad experience about City Hall and a deep understanding of managing a large, fast-paced organization. We have great talent joining us, and I know Daniel will help me transform the way we do things in Boston.”
Koh, an Andover native, holds two degrees from Harvard – a bachelor’s degree in Government and a master’s in Business Administration. Above all, however, Koh, on the surface, appears to be as relatable as they come.
His social media game isn’t a stream of thank you’s or links to bloated political pieces. He’s all about BuzzFeed list posts, and working out with Richard Simmons.

Stonehill political science professor Peter Ubertaccio calls Koh “an interesting and savvy choice,” given his knowledge of City Hall and previous dealings with Menino. His Twitter game, and experience with HuffPost Live, Ubertaccio added, will give Koh “some street credibility among Boston’s growing young politically active set.”
That’s for sure, professor. After all, @dank has to be intentionally ironic, right? Sure, that translates to Dan K., but Koh knows what he’s doing. It’s a refreshing change of pace – better than the full name handles politicians usually rock.
