Winter Storm Janus certainly didn’t carry the kind of clout Hercules did earlier this month, but that didn’t keep Mayor Marty Walsh from sending out the big guns. Yesterday he announced a snow emergency and parking ban, mobilized 500 pieces of snow removal equipment on the road, and had 85 percent of road salt stores at his disposal. But things are looking up as the parking ban is to be lifted this morning at 8:00 a.m..

Though Boston Public Schools have been canceled for the day, a parking ban lift likely means that roads are now in drivable conditions, enough so at least that plows and salt trucks are able to navigate throughout Boston’s labyrinth-like roadways.

But for those unable to find a space not occupied by a motor vehicle or random place holder – which Mayor Walsh approves of for up to two days, depending on the severity of the storm – discounted parking at local garages will be available until 4:00 p.m..

According to the Mayor’s office, ” A deep freeze is expected this week, emphasizing the priority of Public Works crews to get as close to the curb as possible in their snow clearing efforts overnight.”

A winter storm warning is still in effect for the Boston area, though, and will remains until 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. According to CBS Boston, The Hub received a solid 5.2 inches of snow not near as close as the 14 inches courtesy of Hercules but The Weather Channel is calling for at least one or two more inches today. Norwell, Hanover, and Weymouth were all dumped upon the most, receiving approximately, 17, 16, and 15 inches of snow respectfully. A blizzard warning for the South Shore, Cape Cod, and the islands will be in effect until 1:00 p.m. as well.
