Governor Deval Patrick’s final State of the Commonwealth address will take place at 7:30 p.m. tonight (watch: above), right before President Barack Obama delivers his State of the Union, which is set to tip-off at 9:00 p.m. ET.

While Patrick is at the podium tonight, don’t expect him to layout any particularly bold visions for the state’s near future; this State of the State the Governor of Massachusetts opportunity to bring his tenure into scope.

“Tonight is about framing his legacy,” said Peter Ubertaccio, political science professor at Stonehill College.

With the state’s political brass already prepping for Patrick’s departure, ambitious policy doesn’t figure to be front and center.

“But he’s a big thinker,” Ubertaccio said, “so I suspect he will spend some time on the areas near to his heart” – education and transportation, for example – “but I don’t expect that this speech is going to launch any significant policymaking in the Legislature.”

Patrick’s State of the State was originally slated for last week, but, with Winter Storm Janus threatening to pummel the region, the speech was pushed back. So, alas: a double-header of political action.

If tuning into a game, binge watching Netflix shows, or hitting up HBO on Demand for a “True Detective” refresher is more your thing, no need to guilt-trip yourself. Keep the TV on whatever you want, and stream both speeches on your laptop, here on BostInno.
