Boston City Councilor Tim McCarthy (D-5), endorsed Joe Avellone for Governor of Massachusetts today. McCarthy, who represents Hyde Park, Mattapan and Roslindale, believes that Avellone understands the middle class.

“Hyde Park, Mattapan and Roslindale need a leader like Joe in the Governor’s office. His track record of creating thousands of middle class jobs is what my district needs and that’s why I am supporting him,” stated McCarthy on AvelloneForGovernor.

McCarthy stated that he met Avellone over the summer while campaigning and was amazed on seeing him constantly at neighborhood events throughout the city.

Avellone is proud and honored to gain the support of McCarthy. Avellone stated that McCarthy has worked on a number of issues that have impacted Bostonians and has truly shown passion towards helping people and fixing problems.

Avellone, who entered the race last September, has held leadership positions in both the private and public sectors, as a surgeon, entrepreneur and healthcare executive, as well as a Selectman and Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

If elected, Avellone plans on reinvigorating Massachusetts prominent industries including technology, life sciences and healthcare. He also wants to move the state forward with smart manufacturing.

McCarthy is the second city councilor to publicly support a candidate for governor, according to MassLive. District 6 City Councilor Matt O’Malley is backing Treasurer Steve Grossman for governor.

Last Tuesday, Avellone was also endorsed by Worcester Mayor Joe Betty. Although, Avellone is not from the Worcester his wife is.

“I am pleased to endorse Joe Avellone for Governor of Massachusetts. While he is not a son of Worcester, he certainly is a son-in-law His wife Sandy’s family has deep roots in our city, but more important than roots, is the vision that Joe has for our Commonwealth. He has a vision of what our cities need to do for our citizens” Petty said, in a statement released by the candidate.

Avellone is a part of a growing number of candidates for governor. Currently there are four democrats, two republicans Charlie Baker and Mark Fisher, three independents Evan Falchuk, Jeff McCormick and Scott Lively. Out of the four democrats, Joe Avellone, Don Berwick, Martha Coakley, Juliette Kayyem and Steve Grossman, shows Coakley in the lead in a recent poll.
