“Some of the best bartenders and bars are off the beaten path.” – Josh Childs

He’s one of Boston’s most well-known bartenders. Josh Childs, owner of Silvertone, Parlor Sports, and Trina’s Starlite Lounge, has certainly been shaking (and stirring) things up for as long as you can probably remember.

Despite Boston’s changing landscape in the restaurant and bar scene, Childs has managed to build an exceptional reputation and stay ahead of the curve. But after 23 years, this Boston bartender and restaurateur isn’t slowing down one bit.

Here, Josh Childs gives BostInno a glimpse into his daily life in the Hub.

Marian White: How do you spend most mornings?

Josh Childs: I wake up pretty early these days, which is great to get work done for both Silvertone and Starlite, although by 3:00 a.m. I’m a little tired to be pleased about accomplishing anything.

What are the top priorities on your to-do list right now?

Work would be the obvious choice, but really just taking care of two beautiful young girls.

What do you enjoy most about working behind the bar at Silvertone?

That after 23 years of bartending I can still do it with a smile.

If you could make or drink one cocktail for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The classic Manhattan. 2 parts rye, 1 sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters, Luxardo cherry.

What is the worst part and the best part about your typical day?

Honestly, I’m very lucky, there really isn’t a worst part, although tedious tasks like inventory are never fun. But those kind of things exist in every line of work.

Best part? Making someone’s day who has had a lot of “worst parts” of their own.

If you could impart one piece of advice to our readers, what would it be?

Try things out of your comfort zone. Some of the best bartenders and bars are off the beaten path like Vikram Hedge at Sarma in East Somerville. Try a cocktail with ingredients you’ve never heard of.

What would you do if you were suddenly granted a day off from work tomorrow?

Go sit at where Evan Harrison is working the stick (Highland Kitchen or State Park).

If you weren’t answering my questions, what would you be doing instead?

Answering other emails… but this is more fun.
