For me, it’s hard to justify paying several cents or dollars more at Starbucks for the same cup of joe (well, almost) that you’ll find at Dunkin’ Donuts. The cheap prices and delicious iced coffee offerings certainly keep me “running” but I’m not sure the same can be said for the rest of the country.

At least, not according to this map published yesterday in Fast Company. If you haven’t already seen it, the map puts into visual terms different city’s coffee chain preferences. From Dunkin’ Donuts to Starbucks and Peets, Statistician Nathan Yau set out to “see who drinks what and where.”

And obviously, Dunkin’ proved popular on the East Coast – although obsolete on the West Coast. The author describes our New England love of Dunkin’ as “a bizarre and violent love of Dunkin Donuts.” Ouch? I would hardly say my love for Dunkin’ is violent or bizarre. What’s bizarre is someone who would pay more at another coffee shop for the same thing – that’s bizarre.

But I digress. It was not surprising to see Dunkin’s domination of the East Coast and Starbucks’ big national presence, with coffee shops found in every corner of the country.

So cheers, Bostonians! Raise your cheap iced coffees to Dunkin’s clear domination on the East Coast  – and to that extra change you just pocketed.
