Look at that play by Harvard’s Wesley Saunders. Just watch it a few times. That’s not a play that stereotypical Harvard teams are supposed to make, right? And wait what? Harvard won over Cincinnati, 61-57? What in the name of John Harvard is going on?

Well, in full honesty, Harvard has a storied tradition in athletics, just nothing recently (with the exception of their March Madness cameos over the past few years). They still have more football championships than Texas, Florida State, and Miami…only none since 1919. Yet Harvard basketball is helping to bring the school’s athletic tradition back to prominence, one awesome play at a time. Facing Cincinnati in their opening NCAA Tournament game, the Crimson came out strong, nailing threes in the first half.

In the second half, Harvard started to work the interior offense. Saunders typified this trend, making that insane off-balance layup. And even though they were said before the Tournament to be less physical than their Cincinnati opponents, Harvard out-rebounded the Bearcats.

UPDATE: Puns for days:

And check out the block that the Harvard defense dished out protecting their basket:

Harvard will now move on to play again this weekend in the round of 32. They will (most likely) face Michigan State, who Harvard alum (and President of the United States) Barack Obama picked to win the National Championship. So, the Cinderella story might be a little short-lived.

It all remains to be seen though, and given the way that Harvard dominated a more traditionally tougher opponent in their first game, they might just have a chance against a true goliath.
