Kevin Canevari, the senior guard for Mercer, might have unleashed one of the better NCAA Tournament NaeNae dances you’ll see this year. After the Mercer upset of Duke in their opening round game (78-71), Canevari broke out his NaeNae moves to an equally jubilant team. The Mercer upset dance will probably become a popular subject around March Madness fans in the next 24 hours. Unless, of course, you’re a Duke fan. Then you will most likely lock yourself away from watching any sports news for the next few days.

Mercer’s upset will take its place alongside some of the best, though it’s not the best ever by any measurement. 14-seeds have had success before, though the fact that Mercer upset Duke (of all teams) is interesting. Many bracketologists had Duke advancing pretty far, given their NCAA Tournament pedigree. Also, Duke has Jabari Parker on their team, who could possibly be the first overall pick in the next NBA draft. Parker had a game to forget, going 4-13 for only 14 points, though NBA scouts will certainly not take such a performance out of their minds any time soon.

Last season, Mercer nearly made the tournament, only to lose to Florida Gulf Coast in their bid to qualify. They then had to sit at home and watch FGCU become the Cinderella story of March Madness in 2013. This season, they clearly intended on leaving an impression after defeating “Dunk City” to get to the 2014 tourney.

Mercer’s next opponent could potentially be UMass, who face the 11th-seeded Tennessee Vols in their opening game. That Duke is out means a possibly clearer road for the Minutemen, though they will have to take care of their own first round game before they can entertain any notions of a March Madness run. And clearly, they would be wise not look past Mercer.
