Summer is in sight, and we’re soon to be reminded of all the awesome outdoor activities that come with it. Restaurant patios, barbecues, outdoor markets and festivals are just a few reasons to get excited for the warm season (as if you weren’t already), and now, Assembly Row is introducing a new summer series to help you churn out some creative juices in addition to your humidity-induced glisten.

Art in the Park, a series of free outdoor art classes hosted by Assembly Row and the Somerville Arts Council (SAC), will take place at Baxford Riverfront Park along Mystic River every Sunday from June 27th to July 29th, 2 to 3 p.m. this summer.

The classes will be led by area artists, who will help run the series along side Assembly Row and SAC. According to the official release, Art in the Park aims to “provide an outlet for artists to share their passion and allow the community to gain insight into a form of art they may have always wondered about.”

Andrea Simpson, director of marking for Federal Realty Investment Trust at Assembly Row, said in the release that Assembly Row’s foundation is rooted in the arts, having produced past events like ASSEMBLED and Riverfest. According to Simpson, the partnership with SAC has helped Assembly Row to “connect and identify opportunities to be an outlet and resource to both the arts community and theCity of Somerville as a whole.”

So, in order to make Art in the Park a success, Assembly Row and SAC are running a call for artists now through Friday, April 18, searching for talented individuals ready to lead art classes. The call is open to artists and teachers from all backgrounds, as classes will range from painting to photography to sketching, and henna and beading.  In return for the artists’ work, they will be provided with a stipend.

If you’re an artist or teacher interested in being a part of the Art in the Park series, email Lauren Jaffie at info@assemblyrow.com by Friday, April 18. Those eligible to participate in the free art classes this summer will be contacted.

According to Simpson, the goal is to bring the city together in a creative way that they might not have realized was even possible before.

“We’re very excited to bring Art in the Park to the creative community and provide a place for friends and families to learn something new from the people in their own city,” said Simpson.
