[UPDATE] According to the Boston Police Department, “Ricky Prezioso, 41, of Swampscott, has been charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident after Causing Death.”
Just after the 2014 Bike/Walk Summit hosted in tandem by MassBike and WalkBoston, a cyclist was allegedly struck and killed in Charlestown. The driver of the vehicle appears to have hit the biker and fled the scene.
The scene is in close proximity to the MBTA’s Sullivan Station along the Orange Line.
According to CBS Boston, the accident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Cambridge and Spice Streets.
Boston EMS confirmed to CBS that the incident is an active death investigation. There’s been no mention of a suspect at this point.
As you’ll see in the Tweets below and confirmed by the Boston Globe, “the person’s body still lay on Spice Street, hidden behind a temporary screen police installed.”
Witnesses, according to Universal Hub, concur that the driver was behind the wheel of a Waste Management truck and that Boston Police are Police are currently investigating recycling and trash facilities in the area to which a garbage truck might tend to.
Just this afternoon, MassBike and WalkBoston held a summit at the State House to lobby on behalf of two bills aimed at protecting both bikers and pedestrians from motor vehicles. The bills are intended to increase the harshness of the consequences of the assailant while protecting bike lanes and walking paths dedicated solely to cyclists and walkers.
