Boston is known for its concentration of college students, but it turns out the undergrads aren’t the only brainy ones in the state. Business Insider unveiled a new map that shows the different jobs “most unique” to each state, and while they’re not the jobs most commonly found in each state (that would likely be “retail salesperson,” the most common job in the country), they are the most disproportionately concentrated in that area when compared to the national scope.

And here in Massachusetts, it looks like we have the most biochemists within our borders than in any other area in the country. Quite impressive. I personally could not tell you exactly what a biochemist does, but I can tell you that my freshman year roommate dropped her rigorous biochem major not far into first semester (her GPA never quite recovered). Too bad, or else she could have joined the ranks of fellow biochemists in Massachusetts, the most unique job to our state.

Here’s the map below. Some are predictable positions, like a highly concentrated number of political scientists residing in D.C., but others, not so much.

More brainy states on Massachusetts’ level include physicists in New Mexico, chemists in Delaware and electronics engineers in Rhode Island. In Hawaii, there’s a disproportionate number of tour guides (not too surprising), while in Nevada, they’ve got the highest number of Gaming Supervisors than anywhere else. I have to wonder if ‘gaming’ is a technical term for a casino staff member, but it’s not clear.

Business Insider provides an example to break down the numbers and show how they arrived at the jobs for each state, using New York and its high concentration of fashion designers (figures).

For example, in New York, there are about 7,180 fashion designers, out of a total of 8,635,400 employed people. So fashion designers account for about 8.3 out of every 10,000 jobs in New York.

In the U.S. as a whole, there are about 17,370 fashion designers out of a total of 132,588,810 employed people. So about 1.3 of every 10,000 jobs in America are in fashion design.

There you have it – the most unique jobs to each state. While we don’t have the exact breakdown for the number of biochemists in Massachusetts vs. America, we can assume that they’re doing some pretty important work. Maybe while wearing white coats.
