A new MBTA Commuter Rail locomotive will be unveiled at North Station Wednesday morning.

According to a press release, MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott will be on hand at North Station when the first of 40 Commuter Rail locomotives start service on the Haverhill Line.

The T is currently in the process of replacing existing locomotives between 35 and 40 years old. All 40 locomotives are said to be environmentally friendly diesel-electric, which will be tested and thrust into service on the T’s twelve Commuter Rail lines.

The new locomotives will be swapped into service as they arrive through summer 2015. Old equipment will be decommissioned.

In August 2010, MotivePower, Inc. (MPI) was awarded the T’s $222 million contract for the new fleet of 40 Diesel-Electric Passenger Locomotives, which feature new communication systems and passenger comfort upgrades.

The new fleet meets current EPA Emission Standards and is expected to help reduce “carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter.” Locomotives are equipped with engines that are expected to improve fuel efficiency by up to 6 percent – roughly 10,000 gallons of fuel saved by each locomotive per year. The T says this will amount to $1 million in annual savings.

The first locomotive will launch at 10 a.m. from Track 10 at North Station.
