The 2014 Kentucky Derby just concluded, with the crowning of yet another champion. The 140th incarnation of America’s most prestigious horse race displayed the finest and most talented thoroughbreds in the nation this year. As a result, the race received quite a bit of predictable hype (amid, of course, Tom Brady cameos).

Here is the 2014 Kentucky winner:

California Chrome (Jockey: Victor Espinoza)

And here’s a replay of the 2014 Kentucky Derby:

The mile and a quarter race around the Churchill Downs racetrack is customarily fast, and the strategy reflects that. That said, the fastest Kentucky Derby winner remains 1973 champion Secratariat. It’s truly incredible that more than 40 years later, the triple crown-winner’s official time of 1:59:40 is still the fastest in the race’s long and illustrious history.

Coming into the race, Massachusetts and Boston horse racing fans were eagerly anticipating the participation of Wicked Strong, named in honor of Boston Strong. The horses owners determined that a percentage of the winnings would go to the One Fund Boston, aiding those affected by the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

Finally we’ve included some technically out of date data. Since this is always an interesting retrospective exercise, here’s a look at the pre-race odds from earlier in the day on Saturday. How wrong they always are in some cases, compared the actual Kentucky Derby results.
