After much buzz, Legoland Discovery Center Boston is officially opening the doors to its first New England location on May 23, 2014 at the new Assembly Row development in Somerville.

The Legoland Discovery Center caters to kids who love to build and use their imagination, as well as adults who grew up with the toys when they were younger. The brand new facility in Assembly Square – you can find it upon arriving by locating the giant Lego-built giraffe out front – is complete with two floors of exploring for guests, including rides, a café, a 4D cinema and a miniature Boston built entirely out of Legos.

Planning on going to Boston’s own Legoland when it opens this month? Here’s what to expect.

The trip will begin with a factory tour and a video with two Lego-people tour guides. The tour of the factory is all done by video, but kids (and adults, too) can get in on the action as they build their own Lego characters and follow along to find out how Legos are built (lots of heat and pressure, for short). After the run through of the factory, guests will move on to the first ride of the center.

Kingdom Quest sits adults and kids in a moving carriage, equipped with laser guns. The mission is to save the princess, and doing so involves stopping skeletons, rock-throwing monsters and an angry dragon from getting to her.

After completing the mission,  you’ll end up in MiniLand, the miniature Lego-ized version of Boston. All the landmarks are there, from the Citgo sign to Fenway Park to Logan International Airport. The room phases from day to night, with fireworks popping up over a miniature Hatch Shell (which even features a band that guests can control), as well as a race on the Charles River with two crew teams going head to head. You can spend as much time as you want exploring the grand landscape down to all the tiny details, and you might find something that will surprise you.

The journey ends in an open playroom intended for the younger set, from climbing jungle gyms to Lego build stations. Don’t forget to make a pit stop at the café for fuel. Once you’re done, you’ll naturally end up in the gift shop where Lego merch abounds.
