New Englanders, if your mouths and tummies have never been graced with a delicious Jimmy John’s sub, hold onto your britches. Or whatever. The Illinois-based gourmet sandwich chain will open up its first New England shop in the Flats on D apartment complex in South Boston, not far from the Seaport District.

According to Boston Restaurant Talk, Flats on D made the announcement in a Facebook post and on their website, under Meet the Retail! The complex states that Jimmy John’s will be the first of five businesses to open up in their allocated retail spaces, and the restaurant has already begun renovations. No opening date has yet been announced, so stay tuned.

For those unfamiliar with the gourmet sandwich chain, the Flats on D website gives a brief explanation as to what it’s all about. Launched in 1983 in Champaign, Illinois, Jimmy John’s bakes their own bread and slices their own meat and veggies in house, even as they grew from one location to 1,900 nationwide, in 43 states (so basically, they’re everywhere but New England). As an addition to the South Boston/Seaport District community, Flats on D cites the chain’s support of eco-friendly alternatives and small businesses.

OK, but what’s on the menu? Start with the Plain Slims, which includes the basics, like ham and cheese, tuna salad and roast beef. Or, try one of their signature 8″ subs, like the original Turkey Tom, which comes with turkey, lettuce, tomato and mayo. They’ve also got Giant Club Sandwiches, stacked high on thick slices of bread, and the JJ Gargantuan (pictured above), a sub with plenty of meats and toppings, invented by Jimmy John’s brother.

Hungry already? We’ll keep you posted for when Jimmy John’s opens in Boston, so you can finally skip Subway.
