It kind of goes without saying, right? We work hard here in Boston and, naturally, we play hard too. But now there’s statistical proof to back up the former. At least, according to one recent survey.

MyLife, something of a social network that allows users to manage and keep track of their online presence, put together some metrics that helped them come to the conclusion that Boston as a city works harder than anyone else.

They ranked the 200 most populated cities in the country on the following categories, all courtesy of the United States Census Bureau:

  • Percentage of Families with Two Working Parents – Any reason for both parents working is likely a very good reason.
  • Employment Rate – This is definitely not saying that those unemployed don’t work hard, but the higher percentage of the population that’s gainfully employed the better.
  • Commute Time to Work – Even though some of us may not think of it this way, but the time you spend in your car or on the train going to work is technically work as well. The longer time a city spends driving to and from work, the higher they ranked.
  • Percentage of Population Enrolled in School – You don’t have to be a paid professional to work hard. You have to pay before you get paid, so we looked at the amount of a city’s citizens enrolled in undergraduate or graduate school.

They then added up the score for reach city, divided them into averages and voilà: they statistically proved Bostonians bust their asses.

As MyLife aptly puts it:

With its reputation of being a blue-collar city, Boston claiming the top spot on our list was not a big surprise. Something else that wasn’t a big surprise was their ranking of second in the percentage of the population enrolled in school category, which was the best of any city that made the top ten. They also ranked 28th in commute time.
