Sad news this Thursday morning. It looks as though Bostonians will be forced to bid adieu to one of the South End’s most popular restaurants, Hamersley’s Bistro. The Boston Globe reported yesterday that after 27 years, Chef Gordon Hamersley and his wife Fiona Hamersley have decided to close their bustling restaurant business “at the end of October.”

Unfortunately for Boston diners, this also means saying goodbye to one of the Hub’s most famous dishes – Hamersley’s roast chicken. The restaurant’s staple dish, served with garlic, lemon and parsley, has won over critics and even, as the Boston Globe points out, Julia Child, herself.

Chef Gordon Hamersley stated in the Boston Globe:

“Fiona and I have had a 27-year, wonderful experience working in the restaurant, but we came to a point in our careers where it was a good stopping point…”

The chef and owner of Hamersley’s Bistro goes on to share to that he has plans to work and finish up a second book as well as to help and mentor “young cooks in town.”

But what will become of the Hamersley’s Bistro space? The Boston Globe is reporting that “the space and license are spoken for; the undisclosed new owner will renovate and open with a new concept after Jan. 1.” One thing’s for sure – whoever moves into this South End space will certainly have big shoes to fill.

In the meantime, we recommend getting your roast chicken fill while you still can. Hamersley’s Bistro is located at 553 Tremont Street in Boston’s South End.
