Former Boston VC Dies in a Tragic Nantucket Diving Accident

Corey Griffin, a former associate at Boston-based Bain Capital Ventures, died Saturday after diving into Nantucket Harbor, just hours after raising $100,000 for the ALS Association.

Griffin, who had recently moved to New York City to serve as the director of strategic initiatives for information services and technology company RANE, dove into the water from the "Juice Guys" building at around 2 a.m., Nantucket police told the Boston Globe. A nearby off-duty Nantucket lifeguard recovered Griffin, who was transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital and pronounced dead at 3 a.m.

The 27-year-old played hockey for Boston College before transferring to Babson College. Griffin graduated from the latter in 2010, and the school released a statement following the news:

We are deeply saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Babson College alumnus, Corey Griffin. Corey was a 2010 graduate of Babson, where he was a member of the Men’s Ice Hockey team from 2007-2010.

A native of Hingham, Mass., Griffin was a friend of former Boston College baseball star Pete Frates, whose family and friends are behind the now-viral Ice Bucket Challenge. The campaign was launched to raise awareness for the degenerative disease ALS, which Frates contracted in 2012, and has raised millions of dollars in just two weeks. Griffin was on Nantucket raising money for the effort.

"Team FrateTrain lost a good friend today, Corey Griffin," wrote Frates on his Facebook page Sunday. "He worked his butt off these last few weeks for ALS."

Bain Capital took to Twitter to express the firm's grief and share its memories of Griffin:

BCV mourns the loss of our colleague and friend Corey Griffin. Corey’s big smile and generous spirit will be missed by all. #CoreyGriffin

The Babson College hockey team and coach Jamie Rice shared condolences, as well, tweeting:

We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Corey Griffin '10. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Griffin Family. There are no words

Corey Griffin's passing is a terrible & unfathomable loss He was a great teammate & a better man I am honored to know him and his family

"He cared about everybody else,” said Griffin's father Robert, president of the New England area for Cushman & Wakefield, in a statement to the Boston Globe. “He will be missed.”
