Christmas trees have been lighting up all around Boston this month, and last night, Converse joined in on the fun. The footwear company’s new headquarters at Lovejoy Wharf celebrated the first lighting of their Converse sign last night, complete with a pyrotechnic display.

The new world headquarters of Converse, located near the TD Garden, is still undergoing construction before it welcomes its employees, and it’s been exactly a year since the sign, which is visible from the Zakim Bridge as you drive into Boston, was settled into place atop the new building. At the end of November, several Bostonians noticed, and took to Twitter to point out, that the sign appeared to be missing a few of its letters. Perhaps that maintenance was in preparation of the big lighting.

As the sign illuminated in multiple shades of colors – vibrant red, blue and green – for the first time, the Boston-based company made a spectacle of it with a pyrotechnics display, treating those in sight with a surprise light show. According to a release, the lighting was a ceremonious move coordinated by Converse CEO and President Jim Calhoun, meant to mark the company’s upcoming move into the 200,000 square-foot Downtown Boston headquarters, slated for spring of 2015.

The company is currently headquartered in North Andover, Mass.
