Rita Jeptoo, who is a three-time winner of the Boston Marathon women’s division, was confirmed to have tested positive for a banned substance, according to multiple reports. After initial results came back positive in November from a test administered in October, officials tested and confirmed that the “B” sample results were also positive. According to Kenyan media outlet the Daily Nation, Jeptoo tested positive for banned substance EPO (Erythropoietin), which has unfortunately been a commonly (and illegally) used substance by cyclists and runners to boost their endurance.

After providing a statement back in October that it was “premature for us to provide additional comment at this point,” the Boston Athletics Association has not yet offered comment on the matter.

Sadly, it also ruins a popular meme/GIF from the time, when Jeptoo roared down Beacon Street, passing the Green Line MBTA trolley. While the MBTA has not commented on the story yet, we assume that they’re thrilled to be vindicated, retroactively being awarded victory in the race against Jeptoo (though we’re still waiting on that trolley’s “B” sample).

As far as our research can tell, no female winner has ever had a Boston Marathon title stripped because of a failed drug test. The only winner in the women’s division to ever have her win vacated was Rosie Ruiz in 1980, who was later revealed to not have run the entire course.
