A petition to remove the Patriots from the Super Bowl has reached over 61,000 signatures online.

While the Patriots continue to gear up for their Super Bowl XLIX showdown with the Seahawks on Sunday, some NFL fans continue to dwell on the Deflategate investigation.

A petition has emerged on Change.org asking for the Patriots to be immediately disqualified from the playoffs and have the AFC Championship game be replayed between the Ravens and Colts, mostly stemming from the allegations that New England intentionally used under-inflated footballs during its championship tilt against Indianapolis on Jan. 18.

Since its inception on Jan. 21, the plea has amassed over 62,000 digital signatures, including 25,000 on its first day.

Scott Latshaw, the founder of the petition, noted online:

“To maintain the legitimacy of this year’s NFL Championship the Patriots should be immediately disqualified and the two teams they beat to advance should be allowed to continue with the playoff process. The AFC championship should be replayed to determine a rightful representative for the AFC in this year’s Super Bowl.”

Latshaw, who lives in Baltimore and is a Ravens fan, told Sporting News that it’s reprehensible for the Super Bowl to feature a team accused of such charges.

“It’s absolutely horrible. We have an opportunity here to do something right, get this right, whether it means postponing the Super Bowl so we can get this investigation done to see if they were cheating for both the games. … They can’t go through with this multibillion-dollar event and have it tainted like that. This is the (Chicago) Black Sox all over again.”

While the Patriots have made multiple attempts to move past the many Deflate-Gate accusations levied against them, it’s clear that the controversy is still a sticking point for many NFL fans across the country.

Before earning its sixth Super-Bowl bid in 14 seasons, New England overcame two 14-point deficits to best the Ravens in the AFC Divisional Round on Jan. 10 before dominating the Colts, 45-7, in the AFC Championship match a week later.
