As you may have noticed, or even experienced first hand, the MBTA Red Line was arguably the most ill-equipped transit line to accommodate the inclement weather as of late. Subway cars were taken out of service, the electrically charged third rail froze and general infrastructure problems occurred. The Red Line won’t run much smoother this weekend, but that’s actually a good thing.

On Saturday and Sunday, bus service will replace the subway between JFK/UMass and Braintree stations due to weather and snow maintenance. This is the same stretch of track where the third rail was unable to propel the subway train forward causing severe delays on Thursday, Jan. 29.

The Orange Line, which also experienced switch and signal issues causing delays, will also undergo maintenance on Saturday only.

“The MTA in New York has generously loaned the MBTA two jet-powered snow blowers (very similar to the MBTA’s ‘Snowzilla’) to help clear the snow along the Red and Orange Line rights-of-way,” noted the MBTA in a press release. “The MBTA apologizes for the inconvenience while crews work to restore service to the levels customers expect and deserve.”

As has been the case for all of February thus far, the MBTA is currently experiencing delays due to weather and weather-related traffic. The Red Line ceased service momentarily at the request of the Boston Fire Department due to what MBTA spokesperson Joe Pesaturo described as “a very small trash fire” that was “extinguished in seconds.”

Passengers and commuters are urged to check in with the MBTA alerts system for further updates and developments.
