The MBTA has hired Peter Pan Bus Company to provide Red Line shuttle service between JFK/UMass and Braintree stations Thursday and Friday night.

The temporary public-private partnership was first reported by Universal Hub Thursday afternoon, hours after a downed light pole near JFK/UMass station delayed shuttle bus service to Braintree. Subway service between both stops was suspended due to frequent weather-related breakdowns, one of which left 48 passengers stranded on a dead train for two hours Monday morning.

In a statement posted originally on Universal Hub, Boston Carmen’s Union – which represents more than 6,000 T employees – said they have agreed to work with the private bus carrier’s vehicles and drivers in order to help the T pull through an atrocious stretch of weather-related service issues:

During these extraordinary circumstances the MBTA has reached out to the Boston Carmen’s Union regarding the use of Peter Pan equipment and operators for the Red Line shuttle. We have agreed to work with the Authority during this crisis and allow our union brothers and sisters at Peter Pan to provide supplemental shuttle service
