Imparting wisdom on the Harvard University class of 2015 will be the task of the Commonwealth’s former governor, Deval Patrick.

The prestigious higher-ed institution announced on Monday that it will be the two-time democratic governor who will act as “the principal speaker at the Afternoon Exercises of Harvard’s 364th Commencement on May 28.”

Patrick is a native to Chicago but attended school at Milton Academy through an academic scholarship and earned an undergraduate degree at Harvard (class of ’78), as well as a law degree from Harvard Law School.

According to Harvard, Patrick took his oath of office “with his hand on the Mende Bible, presented to John Quincy Adams by freed Africans from the slave ship Amistad.”

“Deval Patrick is an extraordinarily distinguished alumnus, a deeply dedicated public servant, and an inspiring embodiment of the American dream,” Harvard President Drew Faust said in a statement. “We greatly look forward to welcoming him home to Harvard on Commencement Day.”

In 2014, it was media mogul and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg who delivered the flagship address. Actress and comedienne Mindy Kaling delivered that of Harvard Law.

In January of this year, after he was succeeded on Beacon Hill by Republican Charlie Baker (Patrick did not seek a third term), Patrick announced that he would joining MIT as a visiting fellow with the intention of becoming a visiting scholar at its Innovation Initiative, previously launched in 2013.
