After a firestorm of criticism surrounding Deval Patrick’s $7,500 daily rate for being global ambassador for Boston 2024, the Summer Olympic Games advocacy group, the former governor has decided to forego the salary.

“Because I think the Olympics could be good for the Commonwealth, I will continue to help as and when I can, but not for a fee,” said Patrick in a statement.

Patrick’s lofty salary was announced earlier this month shortly after he came aboard Boston 2024, which also boasts his former Department of Transportation Richard Davey ($300,000 per year) as its CEO and former Marty Walsh administration staffer Joe Rull ($175,000) as its COO.

For his part, Mayor Walsh, a strong proponent for Boston hosting the games, doesn’t think Patrick should bank a dime from Boston 2024.

“I don’t think he should be paid at all,” Walsh told Boston Herald Radio bluntly on Thursday morning.

It appears that support for bringing the Games to Boston is also dwindling after a WBUR poll published Thursday night shows that opposition is growing on a monthly basis.

Of the 504 respondents surveyed monthly since the onset of 2015 just 51 percent, 44 percent and 36 percent of respondents in January, February and March supported the bid.

Opposition, conversely, has risen from 33 percent to 46 percent and most recently 52 percent.
