Developers spearheading the revitalization of Union Square in Somerville are seeking a local artist to paint a mural installment inside their new headquarters, which will double as a co-working space.

Union Square Station Associates (US2) signed a lease back in March for 2,500-square feet of ground floor space that will double as an inclusive co-working area that’s expected to occupy the lion’s share of the square footage.

“We want the new coworking space to reflect the vibrancy, diversity and potential that is Union Square,” said Greg Karczewski, president of US2, in a statement. “Who better than someone steeped in Union Square’s arts culture to help bring that sense of community inside the walls of Union Square’s newest work space.”

According to the submission specifications, the installation can be in the form of a painted mural, 2D wall art interactive exhibits or really anything that can fit within the 13-foot high by 25-foot wide wall constraints.

As mirrored by Karczewski, the guidelines suggest the artist  “draw inspiration from the funky, vibrant and diverse Union Square community and the potential future of the Union Square neighborhood and translate it into a design.”

The total budget for the installation is $2,000.

Applications are due Monday, June 15 at 5 p.m. after which the commissioned artist mush have his or her piece finished on or before July 1.

Union Square is already poised for transformation due to the incoming MBTA Green Line station that’ll be housed there as part of the Green Line Extension Project. It’s slated to open in late 2017.

Since December 2014 the city, US2 and active community members have been mapping out the future of Union Square through an engaging planning process. It’s just one of several components to SomerVision, Somerville’s comprehensive 20-year development plan that included the likes of redeveloping one of Greater Boston’s most popular destinations: Assembly Square.
